Lab-grown Diamond — FAQ
Lab-grown Diamond FAQ
20 questions answered honestly — before you choose a lab-grown diamond for your engagement ring center stone. For anything else, please contact the shop.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. They are real diamonds made of the same carbon crystal as natural diamonds, with the same composition, crystal structure, hardness, and brilliance. The only difference is that they are born in a workshop on the surface.
Can you tell them apart from natural diamonds?
Not with the naked eye or a loupe. Even professional gemologists need specialized equipment. That is why grading reports and girdle inscriptions clearly state lab-grown origin.
How are they different from cubic zirconia or moissanite?
Cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials made to resemble diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are not imitations — they are diamonds.
How are they made?
Carbon is gradually added to a small seed crystal over several weeks. Two methods exist: HPHT (high pressure high temperature) and CVD (chemical vapor deposition).
Will they cloud or discolor over time?
No. They are the same diamond as natural, so aging behavior is the same. Everyday dirt can be cleaned with mild detergent and a soft brush.
Are they easily scratched?
No. They have the same Mohs hardness of 10 as natural diamonds — the hardest natural mineral on Earth. They are perfectly suited for daily wear.
Why are they more affordable than natural diamonds?
Because there are no mining, sorting, or distribution costs, and supply is stable. They do not carry a rarity premium, so the same quality costs less.
Does lower price mean lower quality?
No. The price difference reflects rarity. Quality is evaluated stone by stone using the same 4C criteria as natural diamonds.
Do they come with a grading report?
For details on grading reports for the lab-grown diamonds we offer, please inquire at the shop.
What does the grading report say?
It clearly states that the diamond is lab-grown (synthetic), along with the 4C grades and report number.
Is there an inscription on the stone?
Most lab-grown diamonds have a laser inscription on the girdle (edge) that is invisible to the naked eye. It matches the grading report number and does not affect brilliance.
Are the 4Cs the same criteria as natural diamonds?
Yes. Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut are evaluated on the same scale as natural diamonds.
Can I resell them? Do they have asset value?
Do not expect asset value. Lab-grown diamond market prices fluctuate, and resale at purchase price is not realistic. If resale is a priority, choose natural diamonds.
Are they environmentally friendly?
They do not involve mining, and their origin is clear and traceable. However, production requires electricity, so we cannot claim they are completely eco-friendly.
Are more people choosing lab-grown for engagement rings?
Yes. The trend started in Western countries and is steadily growing in Japan as well.
What carat range is available?
LABONITO engagement rings accommodate center stones from 0.50ct to 1.20ct. The setting price stays the same within this range. Outside this range, custom orders are available — please inquire about lead time and pricing.
What color and clarity standards do you use?
Color, clarity, and cut standards for the lab-grown diamonds we offer are available at the shop. You can choose while comparing real stones.
Can I choose a natural diamond instead?
Yes. Engagement ring center stones are available in both lab-grown and natural. Diamonds set in marriage rings are natural diamonds.
Can lab-grown diamond rings be resized or cleaned?
Yes. They are treated the same as natural diamond rings. See the after-service page for details.
Can I see them in person?
Yes. You can try them on at MUQBEL (Chatan, Okinawa). You can also compare lab-grown and natural diamonds side by side. We recommend making a reservation before your visit.
